*DECEMBER 16, 2017 (instead of Christmas weekend)
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE workday Matt and Diana brought their chainsaw and we cut down and then cut up and hauled to the road three trees. The larger one we had planned to cut had to be postponed to get rid a wasp nest in the ground right where the tree would have landed. OOPS!
DECEMBER 10, 2017
2nd Sunday at SPRING HOUSE we had public tours between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.and hardy souls who know 50 degrees isn't very cold if you're dressed for it got to enjoy a great fire in the fireplace at Spring House. We appreciate all of our visitors and our loyal volunteers. Come join the people who are working to help this historic project succeed!
DECEMBER 9, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET was really cold and gray most of the day and people didn't start coming out until later but we enjoyed seeing our fellow vendors and having some great Black Dog Cafe coffee and food from the local country cooks serving turnip soup and cornbread and later one of their delicious brownies. The sky began to clear up after noon and the sun came out. See you there March 10, 2018!
*NOVEMBER 18 (instead of Thanksgiving weekend)
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE 31 students from Dr. Courtnay Micot's FAMU Art Appreciation classes worked with SHI supervising volunteers to plant, water and mulch viburnum, anise, pink muhle grass, and helianthus around the grounds; dig up stumps from the pond bed; clean up limbs under the trees; cut up and remove a large pine limb from IRMA. What a great good help they all were! Thank you!
NOVEMBER 12, 2017
2nd Sundays at SPRING HOUSE was beautiful day all day, blue skies and sunshine; perfect! People were calling before our tours started to see if we were having them. In five years of being open to the public we've only cancelled one time and that was for IRMA. Remember her? The first group today was the largest group to come at one time we've ever had. We want people to know the tours continue from 2 to 4 so there are multiple tours, you don't have to come right at 2:00 to get the whole tour. It's better for us if people come spread out over the two hours. Thank you Spring House volunteers and guests for helping and visiting!
NOVEMBER 11, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET we were advised to skip the market today because of the Veteran's Day Parade. The city closed Monroe Street at 8 a.m. and finding parking, loading and unloading would have been a real challenge. See you December 9 for the Christmas Market!
OCTOBER 28, 2017
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE we had the great help of Rheny, Jake and Todd from Bartlett Tree experts who cut down and then cut up a large sweet gum that broke in half in IRMA. It was hanging over the dry steam bed where it would have been a mess to clean up after the stream comes back if it had fallen. They then directed and helped Phi Beta Sigma service fraternity at FAMU and other SHI volunteers move it all into the woods. The groups then finished other jobs scheduled for our monthly workday! THANK YOU all for your help!!
OCTOBER 8, 2017
2nd Sunday at SPRING HOUSE SHI conducted tours and had a good turnout in spite of the second hurricane that had been forecast to cause us some weather on Sunday. It did rain part of the time but overall it wasn't bad weather. We appreciate the people who visit especially when there hurricane effects forecast. THANK YOU to our visitors who came from Tallahassee; Quincy; Havana; Orlando; Gainesville; Durham, NC; Bainbridge, GA; Hudson, NY; and Cleveland, TN. We appreciate your support!
OCTOBER 7, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET SHI had our information and promotional items at the entrance next to our good neighbors on the east who bring farm fresh fruits and vegetables and on the west our neighbors who grow organic meats and have fresh yard eggs for sale. SHI is there to introduce people who don't know his work to Frank Lloyd Wright and his architecture and specifically to the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed private residence built in Florida. Many people travel to Tallahassee where their young people are attending college at FSU, FAMU or TCC. We are happy to meet so many who stop to chat!
SEPTEMBER 23, 2017
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE we had a great day, lots was accomplished! Maren cleaned the washhouse wall and core wall, an awesome feat! Matt cut two beech trees and a sweet shrub tree away from the drain field where we will plant a red Japanese maple; Matt, Mike, Maren and Byrd all lopped and hauled the trees to the road. Sunday Seth and Byrd pruned the snow-on-the mountain away from the roof of the house. Mike and Byrd are working some days through the week clearing sweet shrub trees from around the three trucked live oak on the north yard, planting fern and cleaning up Irma limbs. THANK YOU!
SEPTEMBER 10, 2017
2nd Sunday Sunday at SPRING HOUSE was cancelled; preparing for IRMA.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET was cancelled; preparing for IRMA.
AUGUST 26, 2017
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE we worked! Maren spread new wood chips on almost the entire trail by herself! Mike planted a long S of peacock ginger that he thoughtfully chose because the deer won't eat it, it's beautiful and he shared it from his own yard. He watered and mulched it and transplanted two sago palms! Byrd gave a personal tour and then re-chipped the terrace, cleaned up piles of weeds and limbs and took them to the road piles. Matt brought his chainsaw Sunday and cut up a fallen tree that was obstructing vision coming down to the curve at the bottom of Okeeheepkee. He cut a large limb away from the tea olive so it will get more sun and room to grow! Two very good work days! Thank you all!
AUGUST 13, 2017
2nd Sunday at SPRING HOUSE we had a crowd of great people, lots of children, and the weather cooperated with no rain and just the right amount of cloud cover. The house was cool and comfortable and everyone enjoyed the tours, volunteers and guests! Thank you all, especially travelers who come to Tallahassee to Spring House!
AUGUST 12, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET was a busy Saturday, it was pretty day, not too hot for August. We meet people every time we go that come the next day to our tours so it's well worth the time and it's always fun Allen, and to visit with the regular vendors and our neighbors, Cheryl and Dave who sell their organically raised meats and eggs.
JULY 22, 2017
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE a large sweet gum limb had come down at the edge of the pond and was blocking the view of the pond. Matt and Diana brought their chainsaw and we cut off its limbs and grapevines so you can see the pond again from the west side of the trail. Another large limb had fallen near the trail and they removed most of that.
JULY 9, 2017
2nd Sunday at SPRING HOUSE more people from the Saturday Downtown Market who said they would visit today came than every before! That was especially nice and we had a very good turnout with people coming from all over the country! Spring House is included in a beautiful new book printed by the Princeton Press by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy called WRIGHT SITES. There is an application of the same name for iphones and one for androids expected in the future!
JULY 8, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET we met many people who didn't know about Spring House and were so excited that there is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home in Tallahassee! It's always inspiring to hear some of their stories as many of them have visited other FLW sites and say they will come the next day for our tours!
JUNE 24, 2017
4th Saturday at SPRING HOUSE we cleared several large sweet gum limbs that came down in the last storm – cut up and moved to the pick-up pile on the road. The largest one came down at the edge of the pond and blocked the view it was so covered up in grape vines (with grapes!)! It's still there but we got most of its smaller limbs and grape vines off so you can now see the pond where you couldn't before. For interested volunteers, of course there's more growth so more outside work in the summertime and fewer people interested in working in the heat and mosquitos, but we always have mosquito spray on hand and plenty of iced bottled water and very much appreciate your help always, but especially in the summer! Thank you!
JUNE 11, 2017
2nd Sunday at SPRING HOUSE we celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright's birth and his legacy of great work around the world! People came from Champaign, Illinois; Annapolis, Maryland, Jacksonville, Florida and we'll add more locations when we've had a chance to look at the guest book. Thank you for your visits and support! Really fun day, rain held off until 4:00, we thank God for that! The cake, ice cream and strawberry sauce were delicious and the cranberry punch apparently hit the spot! Happy Birthday Frank Lloyd Wright!
JUNE 10, 2017
2nd Saturday at the DOWNTOWN MARKET we met many people from Tallahassee and others from out of town, mostly FSU students' parents; always nice to talk about Mr. Wright and his work and some of the folks we talk to do come on Sunday and if not, they may remember our tours next time around or come on a personal tour sometime. It's always fun to see our friends Allen Thompson and Brenda, hear the good music of our local great musicians, appreciate the great art and crafts and get some of the fresh produce, yard eggs and organically raised meats.

4th Saturday at Spring House was a good workday, we had students from FAMU School of Architecture helping us and we got much done still cutting up and moving downed trees from Hermine. We transplanted some elegies and put some pretty variegated plants along the edge of the trail to the pond. The pond hedge appears to be well stablished and transplanted things that have been struggling are catching on.

2ND SUNDAY at Spring House turned into a pretty day, we were so happy for that! Great visits with people from Canada, New Jersey, Michigan, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Winter Park, Miami, and Tallahassee yesterday on our 2nd Sunday Tours! Thank you all!
JANUARY 28, 2017
4th Saturday at Spring House workday was great! We got so much done! We planted 10 potted viburnum on the dam and transplanted 4 from the yard. Someday we won't be looking at the houses across the street so much! Michael and Mandy came from South Carolina to help us and they cut up and cleared the big dead pine that fell with Mike from Tally's help. Then Michael tackled an old pile of pressure treated wood and built a bridge so the hedge can get watered regularly!
