Spring House Institute had its last board meeting of 2013 at Spring House. It has been a very successful first year of actively introducing ourselves and our mission to restore Spring House for beneficial public and private use to the community. We thank EVERYONE who has helped us along the way our first year!

1st Friday at Railroad Square is an amazing evening and often thousands of people attend from all over the area. We meet and make new friends every time we go and look forward to each interesting and great time! We take turns visiting the food establishments, and galleries of friends around the park! Nicole Marie Milchak, FSU Art Faculty, Sculpture 2 class chose areas outside of Spring House to display the work they created since their first visit to the house. Each piece of sculpture was critiqued by the other students, Nicole and the Carolyn Henne, the Department Chair. Family members and friends joined them for a nice "Goodbye" to Nicole who has now moved to Austin, Texas.

Retired Navy Veteran and photography student from Pensacola State College toured Spring House with SHI, Inc. board member Byrd Lewis Mashburn. Every student who visits, every person who visits, comes away from Spring House with a new and expanded point of view, it is something that happens with the experience of being in this unique space. It was a beautiful fall day at Spring House. The spring is looking more natural after time has passed since the torrential summer rains that washed much silt over the top of the spring head and down the stream.

1ST Friday at Railroad Square, Spring House Institute attended 1st Friday for our third visit where we have a table with handouts of information and staffed by some of our board. We've made new friends here and continue to introduce ourselves and share what we're doing with more of the community. It's a FUN evening, even with the rain at Railroad Square!

A group of leading Tallahassee business women toured Spring House with SHI. Inc. board members Patsy Posner and Carolyn Henne. When everyone had arrived, Patsy delivered an introduction to Spring House. It was a pretty fall afternoon, a nice day for the outside part of the tour down to the pond and around the house, and cool enough to be very comfortable inside Spring House.

Nicole Marie Milchak, FSU Art Faculty, held a Sculpture 2 class in the early evening with candles in the fireplace. Her students will use natural materials to develop a sculpture specific to the Spring House. These projects will be set up outside and students will consider concepts and interpretations of the structure of a home. It was an "Awesome and exciting class, on a beautiful fall evening at Spring House. Can't wait to see their art!"

The FLORIDA HERITAGE FOUNDATION toured Spring House with SHI, Inc. Board members Mary Jo Spector and Patsy Posner. We are delighted that they are interested in becoming involved at Spring House and helping with our plans for the house in the future. Spring House is part of Mr. Wright's legacy, Florida's heritage, and it will be a great asset to the community, state, and country. George and Clifton Lewis would honestly include the world!

Michael Diaz, FSU Art Faculty, had the second half of his 3-Dimensional Design Class to display the 3D scuptures made by his class this semester, after visiting Spring House for inspiration in September. The word is, "Class was amazing!" We'll have photos to post asap!

Spring House Institute held it's first Fall fundraiser, Black, White and Cherokee Red at Spring House! There were costumes, and fancy dress, everyone choosing their most fun get up. The music was great, by Smooth Sailin'. The weather was perfect, the people were great, the food was delicious, and "Clifton would have loved this party," was the best description of the night.

The Tallahassee Chapter of AIA (American Institute of Architects) held an evening meeting at Spring House with wine and hors d'oeuvres. A talk about the history of the house and the mission of Spring House Institute was shared and there was enthusiasm expressed for this project of restoration of Spring House for public and private use.

SHI, Inc had a workday in preparation for our October 12 fundraiser. We did much work on the terrace and cleanup outside and inside of Spring House! Thank you all who helped. It was a nice day.

SHI, Inc attended October's 1st Friday at Railroad Square. We set up our table Seth brought with our new banner, donation bowl, handouts, and had places for people to give us their email addresses so we can send them invitations. Many of the people we met last night expressed their interest in coming to our Black, White & Cherokee Red Celebration October 12.

Nicole Marie Milchak, FSU Art Faculty, will hold a Sculpture 2 class and her students will use natural materials: metal, wood, fiber, and clay, to develop a sculpture specific to the Spring House. These projects will be set up outside, on the exterior grounds of the house. Students are to consider many concepts and interpretations of the structure of a home, from a bird's nest to a cathedral, to a teepee, a cave dwelling, and the Spring House, for example.

Michael Diaz, FSU Art Faculty, will have a 3-Dimensional Design Class to successfully translate 2D design concepts into 3D sculptures, demonstrate a working knowledge of woodshop tools, and to research and explore site-specific art making.
•September 5 & 6, 2013 Spring House
Architect Jeff Baker, and a structural engineer Mat Daw came from Albany, New York and Washington, DC to donate their knowledge and skills toward the basics of a historic structure report on Spring House for Spring House Institute. We are very excited and grateful to have their expert help. What they contribute will give us specific information that individuals and corporations who are considering helping us with large donations, will require to make an informed decision.

Spring House Institute had a table at Railroad Square at 6 pm to meet more of our surrounding community members and introduce ourselves and our mission. This was our second venture out into the community. Our previous experience at LeMoyne's Chain of Parks Art Festival in April was very exciting. We received much enthusiastic support and made many new friends, some of whom have become Friends of Spring House and volunteers! We made many new friends and look forward to seeing some of them at our fall fundraiser October 12.

Spring House Institute held our 1st Summer Chat for Friends of Spring House and other people who have volunteered to help us. It was a lively, fun evening! We had good food and drink and everyone joined in by telling who they are, stories of how they came to know about Spring House, how they feel about it, and what they'd like to do to help. SHI,INC board members shared some of our stories and the kind of things we do on this adventure, and much new energy and inspiration was shared. Thank you for being with us! We look forward to our next meeting together!

FSU Dept of Art Chair, Carolyn Henne and visiting art professor, Marnie Bettridge and her students from her 3D Foundations course came for the second visit to Spring House and brought the wood sculptures they constructed inspired by their first visit. It was a dry (Yay!) and hot (HOT!) day outside. We passed around two palmetto fans and drank water, but it was cool inside Spring House and the frogs and crickets serenaded. Marnie took photographs of everyone's work and then the group, led by Marnie, critiqued each students work. Photos have been added to our PHOTO page asap! It was a privilege to be with them!

A small work party today put new tarps over the core above the roof and secured them. The core needed covering, all the rain has caused leaking between the mortar and the blocks that extend above the flashing where the roof meets the core, above the flashing. The recent work done on the drainage at the entrance to Spring House is working well.

Diane Roberts, Florida native, and singular writer, visited Clifton Lewis and her daughter Byrd, to read "Find Your Ground," her recent article for "Oxford/American" Summer Issue 2013, about Spring House and more. •July 16 & 25, 2013 Spring House
FSU Dept of Art Chair, Carolyn Henne and visiting art professor, Marnie Bettridge and her students from her 3D Foundation course visited Spring House as an intended setting for their wood sculpture project. They will visit Spring House twice - first today, to scope and sketch - next, for photographing and critique of their wood sculpture project. It was a beautiful day in the woods; cicadas, tree frogs and crickets did their thing; a humming bird sipped nectar from wild orange lilies at the entrance of the house; a nice breeze blew through the open front door; the floors were cool, and the sun was shining.

Volunteers will be working on the grounds in the morning and also doing a repeat water test on the roof. Thank you to those of you who will be helping us. We're grateful for all of the people who care about this important project and continue to contribute their work and funds. We are just getting started!

FSU digital photography class visited Spring House to take photos for a PhotoShop project to combine different architectural elements from the exterior of Spring House with elements from photos of Florida Southern College into a photo montage. Rain prevented the photo shoot outside, but the professor and students had an interior tour of Spring House including an oral history by a Spring House Institute board member and enjoyed being in the house in the rain.
•June 27 Spring House Institute, Inc, submitted our first Florida Small Matching Grant to request funds to do a current Historic Structure Report on Spring House. A Historic Structure Report is a necessary step in being able to apply for an Florida Special Categories Matching Grant in the future, for acquisition and restoration of Spring House. Applying for one of these grants takes significant time and perseverance. We are very proud to have accomplished this task. We have also applied and been accepted on the FindLearnGive.org site for local nonprofit corporations to be more easily found by people who want to contribute to accepted charities. Since our very busy April, with our first two, and very successful fundraisers, and attending LeMoyne's Chain of Parks Art Festival, we have been handling all the cycles that are part of having introduced SHI, Inc to the surrounding communities for the first time. We then started the processes required to accomplish submitting the grant and being accepted on FindLearnGive.org.

FSU Art professor with Drawing II students made a tour of Spring House and the grounds and then spent the afternoon doing drawings of different perspectives of the house. Photos were taken of a five foot oak snake on a large oak tree. It was a beautiful, warm day out in the woods.

Spring House Institute held a Celebration Fundraiser! featuring a preview of Pete Winter's beautiful, beginning documentary of Spring House use and restoration, with music composed for it by Wayne Gratz; a presentation by Kevin Schweizer on our progress and plans; fabulous food and drink; wine from Hotel Duval; music by the Fried Turkeys, and a silent art auction by FSU Art students & their professors! Thank you to our fine sponsors: Kevin Schweizer/Architect, CFM-NMS Fellows, Brad Roberts /Restorations, Armstrong Tree Service, Pete Winter/Winterstone Productions, and the Hotel Duval. Thank you also to our supportive friends at Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation. The Celebration was a great success, and everyone enjoyed the occasion! Friends came from as far away as New Symrna Beach, Florida and Columbus, Georgia!

We had our first non-profit table at a public function last weekend at LeMoyne's great annual Festival of Art! Saturday and Sunday were inspiring days for us as the community showed great interest, and support, for what Spring House Institute is doing! We look forward to making more new friends as we find other ways to introduce ourselves to the community!

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Robert Olen Butler and renowned poet Erin Belieu shared with guests some of their writing at Spring House Institute's first fundraiser. The evening was a great success! Everyone enjoyed seeing the house, making new friends, sharing stories, and then hearing Erin's poetry that hit the spot, and being amazed at Robert's animated reading of his story! Fun was had by all and the fire was very welcome on a chilly evening.

Volunteers spread woodchips on the terrace from a large, double sweet gum tree that had to be removed because of its age, height and proximity to Spring House. Recent grading of the terrace needed a temporary cover for two April fundraisers.

FSU Art Adjunct with students from a class in Contemporary Art Foundations, an introduction to contemporary art for studio majors, visited Spring House and experienced the site. The final project is a studio-based research project. About 15 students and three professors attended. Some students may have their semester project in the end of April fundraiser. FSU volunteer staff removed two upright pianos that the Sculpture Studio will dismantle and turn into art, some may be in the April fundraiser. Winterstone Productions, making a documentary of the entire restoration of Spring House, made new film of the house as it is today.

FSU Art professor with students made a tour of Spring House to experience the "unity, simplicity and nature of materials," that Mr. Wright often spoke of. Students and their teacher looked at different spaces in the house suitable for their projects. Different shapes and sizes of customized S hooks made by the art department were tried in the horizontal seams of the Ocala block walls.

2nd Fireside Chat at Spring House was an informal gathering of educators, students, and community members who toured Spring House, met one another, discussed what's been happening since the 1st Fireside Chat, what's coming up in the near future, and new ideas for outreach. Winterstone Productions, making a documentary of the entire restoration of Spring House, filmed some of 2nd Fireside Chat.

FSU Art professor with students from digital foundations, sculpture/ceramics class made their second trip to Spring House to continue forming ideas for their projects this semester. They made this visit over their Spring Break. Several graduate students in sculpture also attended, and some potential grad students came along for the visit to Spring House.

FSU Art professors with students visited Spring House in the morning from a 2D design class, the second visit for them, and a first visit for a class in installations. About thirty students attended. All classes have toured the house and grounds and some have held class, while others extended the experience of the house and land their entire visit.

FSU Art professor with students from a painting and drawing class visited Spring House in the afternoon. Students enjoyed the house, walked the grounds and the dry stream bed to the spring head. Each found their spot to draw, inside or out, and will continue working on their piece. It was their last class before Spring Break. Art will be chosen by their professors for an end of April fundraiser from all classes that make the visit to Spring House.

FSU Art professor, Kevin Curry with students from digital foundations, sculpture/ceramics class made their first trip to Spring House to begin projects for classes this semester. About 30 students attended and several brought their parents to see the house. Art created by both professors and students will be available for purchase at an end of April fundraiser.

FSU Urban and Regional Planning professor, Mary Jo Spector, held the first class at Spring House. Students completed a site design/land use planning project.

FSU Department of Art Chair, Carolyn Henne, and eleven professors and adjuncts, toured Spring House with Spring House Institute Board members, after hearing a brief history and architectural description of the house. A discussion followed about the opportunity to have classes at Spring House this semester. Ideas were expressed about possible projects in the disciplines represented.

1st Fireside Chat at Spring House – Our 1st Fireside at Spring House was a very informal meeting and was open to all new ideas about potential of developing Spring House as a community resource. It was geared to the guests who attended and all enjoyed refreshments, sitting around the fire discussing different alternatives. The Fireside Chat is a Taliesin tradition where Frank Lloyd Wright and his students sat around the fire, perhaps playing the piano, and talking about architecture and life.

1st Work Day and Celebration – Students from FAMU School of Architecture and FSU Department of Urban and Regional Planning and others volunteered to work: grading the terrace, removing invasive plants around the house, window washing inside and out, cleaning inside the house, cleaning interior woodwork, reworking the drainage at the entrance of the house, rocking the driveway. The work was followed by a Celebration with music, food, drink, and a short presentation about plans for fundraising, restoration and completion, and how the house will be used to benefit the public.

A Historic Structure Report is a necessary step in being able to apply for an Florida Special Categories Matching Grant in the future, for acquisition and restoration of Spring House. Applying for one of these grants takes significant time and perseverance. We are very proud to have accomplished this task. We have also applied and been accepted on the FindLearnGive.org site for local nonprofit corporations to be more easily found by people who want to contribute to accepted charities. Since our very busy April, with our first two, and very successful fundraisers, and attending LeMoyne's Chain of Parks Art Festival, we have been handling all the cycles that are part of having introduced SHI, Inc to the surrounding communities for the first time. We then started the processes required to accomplish submitting the grant and being accepted on FindLearnGive.org.

FSU Art professor with Drawing II students made a tour of Spring House and the grounds and then spent the afternoon doing drawings of different perspectives of the house. Photos were taken of a five foot oak snake on a large oak tree. It was a beautiful, warm day out in the woods.

Spring House Institute held a Celebration Fundraiser! featuring a preview of Pete Winter's beautiful, beginning documentary of Spring House use and restoration, with music composed for it by Wayne Gratz; a presentation by Kevin Schweizer on our progress and plans; fabulous food and drink; wine from Hotel Duval; music by the Fried Turkeys, and a silent art auction by FSU Art students & their professors! Thank you to our fine sponsors: Kevin Schweizer/Architect, CFM-NMS Fellows, Brad Roberts /Restorations, Armstrong Tree Service, Pete Winter/Winterstone Productions, and the Hotel Duval. Thank you also to our supportive friends at Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation. The Celebration was a great success, and everyone enjoyed the occasion! Friends came from as far away as New Symrna Beach, Florida and Columbus, Georgia!

We had our first non-profit table at a public function last weekend at LeMoyne's great annual Festival of Art! Saturday and Sunday were inspiring days for us as the community showed great interest, and support, for what Spring House Institute is doing! We look forward to making more new friends as we find other ways to introduce ourselves to the community!

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Robert Olen Butler and renowned poet Erin Belieu shared with guests some of their writing at Spring House Institute's first fundraiser. The evening was a great success! Everyone enjoyed seeing the house, making new friends, sharing stories, and then hearing Erin's poetry that hit the spot, and being amazed at Robert's animated reading of his story! Fun was had by all and the fire was very welcome on a chilly evening.

Volunteers spread woodchips on the terrace from a large, double sweet gum tree that had to be removed because of its age, height and proximity to Spring House. Recent grading of the terrace needed a temporary cover for two April fundraisers.

FSU Art Adjunct with students from a class in Contemporary Art Foundations, an introduction to contemporary art for studio majors, visited Spring House and experienced the site. The final project is a studio-based research project. About 15 students and three professors attended. Some students may have their semester project in the end of April fundraiser. FSU volunteer staff removed two upright pianos that the Sculpture Studio will dismantle and turn into art, some may be in the April fundraiser. Winterstone Productions, making a documentary of the entire restoration of Spring House, made new film of the house as it is today.

FSU Art professor with students made a tour of Spring House to experience the "unity, simplicity and nature of materials," that Mr. Wright often spoke of. Students and their teacher looked at different spaces in the house suitable for their projects. Different shapes and sizes of customized S hooks made by the art department were tried in the horizontal seams of the Ocala block walls.

2nd Fireside Chat at Spring House was an informal gathering of educators, students, and community members who toured Spring House, met one another, discussed what's been happening since the 1st Fireside Chat, what's coming up in the near future, and new ideas for outreach. Winterstone Productions, making a documentary of the entire restoration of Spring House, filmed some of 2nd Fireside Chat.

FSU Art professor with students from digital foundations, sculpture/ceramics class made their second trip to Spring House to continue forming ideas for their projects this semester. They made this visit over their Spring Break. Several graduate students in sculpture also attended, and some potential grad students came along for the visit to Spring House.

FSU Art professors with students visited Spring House in the morning from a 2D design class, the second visit for them, and a first visit for a class in installations. About thirty students attended. All classes have toured the house and grounds and some have held class, while others extended the experience of the house and land their entire visit.

FSU Art professor with students from a painting and drawing class visited Spring House in the afternoon. Students enjoyed the house, walked the grounds and the dry stream bed to the spring head. Each found their spot to draw, inside or out, and will continue working on their piece. It was their last class before Spring Break. Art will be chosen by their professors for an end of April fundraiser from all classes that make the visit to Spring House.

FSU Art adjunct with students from a 2D design class came for their first visit to Spring House. The students got a feel for the house and inspiration for their art. About 20 students attended a morning class.

FSU Art professor, Kevin Curry with students from digital foundations, sculpture/ceramics class made their first trip to Spring House to begin projects for classes this semester. About 30 students attended and several brought their parents to see the house. Art created by both professors and students will be available for purchase at an end of April fundraiser.

FSU Urban and Regional Planning professor, Mary Jo Spector, held the first class at Spring House. Students completed a site design/land use planning project.

FSU Department of Art Chair, Carolyn Henne, and eleven professors and adjuncts, toured Spring House with Spring House Institute Board members, after hearing a brief history and architectural description of the house. A discussion followed about the opportunity to have classes at Spring House this semester. Ideas were expressed about possible projects in the disciplines represented.

1st Fireside Chat at Spring House – Our 1st Fireside at Spring House was a very informal meeting and was open to all new ideas about potential of developing Spring House as a community resource. It was geared to the guests who attended and all enjoyed refreshments, sitting around the fire discussing different alternatives. The Fireside Chat is a Taliesin tradition where Frank Lloyd Wright and his students sat around the fire, perhaps playing the piano, and talking about architecture and life.

1st Work Day and Celebration – Students from FAMU School of Architecture and FSU Department of Urban and Regional Planning and others volunteered to work: grading the terrace, removing invasive plants around the house, window washing inside and out, cleaning inside the house, cleaning interior woodwork, reworking the drainage at the entrance of the house, rocking the driveway. The work was followed by a Celebration with music, food, drink, and a short presentation about plans for fundraising, restoration and completion, and how the house will be used to benefit the public.
